The Founder’s Story
Meet Willie Booker, where fishing began at the age of 4 years old with his dad and older brother, building a lifelong bond and teaching lessons in patience, resilience, and connection. Today, as the founder of The REEL Project of California, he brings his passion for fishing, as well as experience in law enforcement, and commitment to community-focused initiatives to a mission: helping young people build confidence, discover their potential, and recognize that their future is worth investing in.

My Journey
Fishing with my dad was more than a fun activity, it was his way of preparing me for life.
Some of my greatest life lessons were taught besides my dad on the water, and little did I know, those lessons would end up shaping who I would become. Fishing became a way of life for me and taught me patience, resilience, and the value of connection.
Through TRP, it is my honor to carry those lessons forward, helping young people and members of the community discover their true potential.
The Turning Point
What Fishing Gave Me
Fishing wasn't just a hobby; it was my sanctuary. On the water, the noise of the world faded away. Fishing taught me patience, resilience, and how to adapt. It also opened the door to new places and new people. Exploring different bodies of water gave me opportunities to experience the outdoors, build relationships, and step away from everyday stress. Fishing is still how I recharge, enjoy some friendly competition, and have a good time.
Why I Started TRP
I started The REEL Project because I saw too many youth drifting without a compass. I knew that the same peace and discipline I found on the water could be the vehicle to reach them.
Over time, I came to understand how fishing can help people lower their walls. There is something about sharing time beside the water that allows people to feel more comfortable talking, listening, and opening up. For me, fishing has always provided a safe space to clear my mind and reconnect—with nature, with others, and with myself.
A Shared Vision
My vision for TRP is to create opportunities for young people to discover what they’re capable of—and know they have people in their corner. Through outdoor recreation, mentorship, and meaningful learning experiences, we help youth build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop skills they can carry into everyday life.
R.E.E.L. stands for Recreation, Education, Empowerment, and Leadership. Fishing is where my story began, and it remains an important part of this work. The vision reaches across the outdoors and into how young people understand themselves, respond to challenges, and make choices about their future.
That vision also guides 'TRP-DECISIONS', the educational curriculum we are developing to help youth recognize their emotions, think before they act, and navigate stressful situations with greater awareness. Whether we’re sharing an outdoor experience or working through a lesson together, the purpose remains the same: to help young people feel supported, recognize their potential, and move forward with confidence.

Recreation
Opening doors to outdoor experiences that spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and build connection—giving youth space to recharge, try something new, and discover what they’re capable of.

Education
Mastering the craft of fishing and the science of the environment, turning curiosity into practical knowledge and lifelong skills.

Empowerment
Discovering personal potential and the confidence to take charge, realizing that every youth has the power to define their own path.

Leadership
Stepping up to mentor others and lead by example, fostering a community of stewards who care for both people and the planet.
